Dot & Harry…
Tell us a bit about Dot & Harry…
Dot & Harry is named after my Grandparents on my mother’s side, they met during World War Two and were in love from then until they passed away five years ago. My Granddad worked as an RAF engineer and my Nannie worked in the factory that built the parts he needed to fix the planes. They came from a generation where love, (and planes) were built to last and through thick and thin they remained besotted with each other for over 60 years. They were never wealthy, never big career people with fancy possessions. They lead a simple lifestyle and their love of each other and their family was wealth enough for them. The logic of their lifestyle, as well as the beauty and efficiency that they both saw in industrial design can be seen throughout Dot & Harry’s collections. We create minimal, simple, stylish designs that set the precedence for your big day.
What made you start up Dot & Harry…
It seems as though a lot of the foundations for wedding businesses are created from planning your own, and my story is no different! From browsing through Pinterest and searching through bridal blogs looking for inspiration, I began to feel as though what I wanted for my own wedding, wasn’t actually out there, or if it was, it was above and beyond any reasonable price point. From this I began to wonder if there were other couples meeting this barrier, and I realised, in a very small way, there might be something I could do to change this. And thus Dot & Harry was born! From working as a full time graphic designer, I decided to turn my hand to creating a few simple ranges that I’d be happy to send out to my guests on my wedding day. And a few simple ranges soon turned into seven customisable collections that can be tailored to be exactly what the not-so-traditional couple would want for their own big day.
What makes you Unique…
Stripping back all the flounce and flourishes that are associated with weddings is one aspect that helps Dot & Harry stand out from the crowd. Keeping our designs minimal also keeps them fresh, and more importantly, non-gender specific. My fiancé likes to keep up with the latest trends, he’s in the army and he likes interior design and when it came to planning our own wedding, he has just as much involvement as I do. Keeping the designs simple, the colours interchangeable and the flowers to a minimum (although there are some, because I couldn’t resist at least a couple) means that your stationery can be representative of both halves of your couple.
What kind of couples match your style of service…
Anyone that wants style, simplicity and friendly service.
Tells us what you love about your business…
Dot & Harry started off as a bit of a passion project for me, from starting my first initial sketches to completing the last detail of the final collection, then seeing them printed for the first time was such a buzz. I love that initially I have creative freedom to design whatever I like, then working with couples to turn that design into their own is a lovely feeling.
Most favourite event/ wedding…
My Auntie’s last year. She was 53 when she got married for the first time, and having waited all that time for her to find the man of her dreams (and to be a bridesmaid for her) the day was absolutely incredible. I’ve never been to anything where there was so much love in one room.
People’s reaction to your business…
Just a huge amount of support. As I come from a design background, my dad is a designer, my degree is in graphic design and I still work as a full time designer 9-5, I’m surrounded by a lot of critics, but there has been nothing but positivity and encouragement since I launched Dot & Harry in November.
Future plans…
I’d love to be able to start a bespoke range that I can cater exactly to each couples styles and tastes. I’ve also been practicing calligraphy for about 6 months so would really like to offer envelope addressing and the potential to swap digital typography for calligraphy as an option, as soon as I feel confident enough!
