‘Kid’s Party’ Inspired Wedding…
Dave and Michaela’s wedding is as fun as they come – Face painting, colouring, pick n mix and an awesome, colourful cake!
They ditched the traditions and splashed out on the things that meant the most to them, bringing a whole lotta love and fun to Brighton…
Dave & Michaela…
Tell us how you met and got engaged…
We are one of those rare (not) modern couples who met… online, Tinder to be specific. We went to a cocktail bar and ended up in Camden (the mecca for alternative dates). We got engaged at Disneyland Paris.
How would you describe your wedding theme/ decoration?
Disco love themed kids party.
What were your favourite details?
The personalised vows which had a shout out to Pearl Jam and a reference to Parks and Recreation. The mariachi band playing as guests arrived, pick and mix in buckets and spades.
Was your favourite part of the day?
There was a point we had made our vows, our speech, our first dance and everyone was getting a bit wasted. We looked around and nearly everyone was dancing, there were groups of people who had never met but were all shaking their booties on the dance floor together and that was our fave.
How was your day unique?
We decided to only keep traditions that suited us. We had no sit down meal, the only speech was made by both of us, my mum and dad walked me down the aisle (yay feminism). The evening part of the wedding (where all our reception guests arrived) started as soon as we entered the reception venue at 5pm as the part between ceremony and dancing can feel long.
What made you chose your wedding venue?
We LOVE Brighton! We explored the town and decided to go grand for the ceremony and casual for the party. We chose Ohso because as soon as you walk outside you’re on the beach so we could have some moments just us and the sea.
Tell us about your wedding outfits and why you picked them…
I began my career as a fashion stylist (before moving into wedding planning) so I knew I wanted something WOW. I went shopping to all the usual dress shops but it just wasn’t me (and I found it a bit shite as a plus sized woman). In the end I found it in Debenhams of all places, Daves outfit was a bit easier as he just knew he didn’t want a standard suit and Noose and Monkey certainly aren’t your average company! He wore Dr Martens and I wore the most amazing head piece by Hysteria Machine, I think those were our fave pieces.
What was your budget?
£10,000 (give or take a couple of hundred quid)
What was your biggest expense?
Our biggest expense was our photographers/ videographers (followed closely by the venue). We knew that was what we wanted to spend the most money on as the photos are what’s left after we all went home. We don’t regret a single penny as they weren’t just the most friendly and talented people, they also calmed us on the day. They captured the essence of our story and there are photographs I can’t believe are me because I look so beautiful.
How did you save money?
We paid for a mariachi band and had “DJ i-pod” We spent hours creating our playlist. By the end we had to whittle down from 20+ hours to 8, we would put the playlist on and dance in our living room. If it wasn’t a banger that made us dance it was relegated. It was like a wedding playlist version of musical statues.
Advice to any couples about to get married?
Try and stay as authentic as possible to the picture in your head which pops up when you first get engaged. Enlist help and let your friends and family be involved. Pick your vendors by your style and make sure you have a bit of budget left over for the few weeks before where things can crop up.
