The sea is a destructive yet beautiful force…
We have something a little different for you today…Brought to us by Mr & Mrs Unique supplier, Rebecca Douglas Photography, this nautical bridal shoot was inspired by the myth of ‘The Siren’ – beautiful, yet deadly creatures whom are said to lure sailors to shipwreck with their enchanting music and voices.
Here Rebecca tells us more about the inspiration for the shoot…
Rebecca Douglas Photography…
In the Summer of 2016, I was asked to be a part of a creative project with the theme of deconstruction. I worked with a team of local creatives who specialise in hair, make-up and bridal fashion to create unique pieces for a local art exhibition.
I have always lived by the sea; it has been my home and it constantly fascinates and amazes me. From the ferocity of the waves to the wonders of the fairytales and mythology surrounding the vast scape. One myth I decided to focus on was that of ‘The Siren’ which first appeared in Homers ‘The Odyssey’; beautiful, yet deadly creatures whom are said to lure sailors to shipwreck with their enchanting music and voices.
Deconstructing this myth, we worked on the concept of ‘bride’ and how this represents different shades of beauty and opted for a deconstructed feel of the traditional bridal ‘look’, pairing nautical themes with contrasting bridal elements, such as a beaded slip dress over the top of a metallic swimming costume; two contrasting pieces which subvert the conventional bridal aesthetic and the mythology of the Siren.
For another piece, we used a modern bridal look; a two-piece bridal gown which consisted of a cropped lace top with three quarter length lace sleeves and a mermaid style lace floor-length skirt. The cropped top had lace embroidery that dropped slightly off the hem, which gave the illusion of and mirrored that of the sea foam on the shoreline.
