Sound Advice from Professional Photographers…
I have huge confetti photo envy! I have no such photo from my day and being in the wedding world, I get to see SO many incredible, creative confetti photos… I’m seriously gutted that I don’t have my own!
So to make sure you don’t have the same regrets, I thought I would ask some of our amazing creative wedding photographers for some top tips on how to achieve the perfect photo… they know better than anyone!
ELS Photography…
If you are going to do a confetti shot (and I LOVE them) do it well! Here are my top tips to getting it right:
- Colourful – colour colour colour. Think rainbows!
- Paper – Tissue paper type confetti floats all prettily before landing. Dried petals don’t stay up in the air as long. (most paper confetti is biodegradable now)
- All at once! I like to orchestrate this part of the day – drips and drabs in an isle formation can look underwhelming on camera. Also larger pieces float longer.
- LOT’s of it. I mean lots. don’t skimp on a measly handful or not enough for your guests, measure enough for two big handfulls per guest and forget confetti cones, a basket will do and is much quicker and cheaper! I’m sure you’ll know someone with a basket…
Confetti cannons, only a few pound and you can ask a guest to set some off during the shot or even use them later for your first dance or portraits! (for first dances i’d recommend at least 5!)

Alexa Loy Photography…
I always tell my couples to invest in confetti pops if they are wanting a great confetti photo… they are loads of fun! You never quite know what’s going to happen!
Also bubbles make a wonderful alternative when confetti isn’t allowed.

Assassynation…
Get LOTS of confetti in… the brighter the better! Forget the normal lineup and trust the advice your photographer gives you…

Studio 1208…
Tell guests to put the confetti in their hands, rather than keep it in the bag or box it came in (to avoid having to pour it!), and to have everyone throw the confetti UP, not AT the bride and groom! Whether you do a “tunnel”, or a cluster, all of these things will work to make it absolutely beautiful!
Also, I love when couples get fresh petals, or larger confetti, as the dried stuff, rice, and tiny confetti gets stuck everywhere in the bride’s hair! It is especially tough because we haven’t shot any portraits yet! I also love the colourful fuzzy balls, but they aren’t biodegradable, so they need to be cleaned up.

Binky Nixon Photography…
It can be tricky to capture so take plenty of shots so I always do a tunnel for the couple to walk though, and get all the guests to cheer as they come by
I also tell the couple to try not to squint too much – although very tricky when people are throwing things at your face!
Don’t forget to hold hands, look up and enjoy your smiling guests as you go by!

Sharon Cooper Photography…
- Make sure there is PLENTY of confetti, white or coloured paper
- go with your photographer’s advice as to where is a good setting
- Dried flower petals don’t often show up and are a bit of nuisance in hair and clothing! Plus on a hot day they clump in sweaty waiting hands, so provide cones.
- Watch out for guests with large pashminas…they flap about as you throw and can get in the way of a good photo
- Enjoy the moment, involve as many as possible look up and SMILE through it.
London-Chelsea-register office (above) – It was a Christmas Wedding and the bride had hand punched snowflake confetti, I just love their pure joy at that moment. Imagine sitting there night after night punching it all, then THE MOMENT, you are finally MARRIED and it just flutters prettily down around you.
Gita Dom wedding – This was two medium sized confetti canons, there was a certain anxiousness about it firing off in faces… so the two holding canons each side stepped back a bit. Although the sky isn’t full of confetti, it means we can see everyone’s super happy surprised faces, which the couple LOVE, it’s all about the memories you make!
Freckle Photography…
There are two really great ways to get awesome confetti shots but they normally need a bit of prior organisation to make sure you get plenty of confetti all being thrown at the same time;
Make a confetti run way – two rows of guests with as much confetti as possible and walk through – if you provide confetti then you can make sure there is plenty – more is more!!!
Gather guests around in a semi circle behind you and get them to all throw at the same time
I always get a couple of guests to throw some confetti towards the lens so give that full on confetti frame!
