Lucy…
Tell us a bit about your business…
Lucy Can’t Dance specialises in quirky and colourful wedding dresses for non-traditional brides. Combining exciting colours, beautiful fabrics and innovative designs we promise to give you a unique dress that reflects your personal style and shows off your beauty.
We love beautiful lace fabric, colourful dip dye effects, buttons and detailed backs. We also make bridesmaid dresses and vintage style fashion. Designs are often inspired by retro and boho styles whilst combining modern twists.
What made you start up the business…
I’ve always been interested in fashion and ten years ago I got accepted for a dressmaking internship. I loved being able to make myself unique outfits that fitted perfectly. I quickly started learning new techniques and experimenting with fabrics.
The business started off as a vintage inspired fashion line making custom handmade clothing. As my skills developed and customer base increased I soon made my first wedding dress and that was the start of something amazing. Now I love designing new and exciting wedding dresses. There is so much more I want to learn and I can’t wait to add more exciting dimensions to the business.
What makes you Unique…
One to one consultations where the bride’s ideas and my expertise and creativity means we can design the perfect dress for the big day. I am always experimenting with more techniques and styles to give fresh exciting new designs. My use of exciting colours and styles result in exciting and unique dresses. Brides don’t have to wear white anymore! I love adding elegant splashes of colour. My down to earth and easy going manner will ensure that brides are relaxed and feel fully involved in the design process.
What kind of couples match your style of service…
My dresses are perfect for brides who want to break tradition and go for something elegant with a splash of quirkiness. Brides who want a dramatic dress that will make people’s mouths drop as you walk down that isle.
Tells us what you love about your business…
I love that every day is different. Every dress and client is unique and I get such a buzz seeing the process from design to the final fitting. The real joy is seeing photos from actual weddings and seeing the dress in action. I love designing and making new dresses, I am that person that will be sewing till 5am – excited to see the final product
Most favourite event/ wedding…
I was recently involved in the most amazing photoshoot and the photos are just breath taking! In Maidstone we did an Alice Through the Looking Glass style shoot in beautiful gardens and an incredible Teepee. I made two new dress designs especially for the shoot and these were my favourite designs so far.
We had such an amazing time running around the gardens and shooting with some amazing props provided by HireLove. The photography by Jodi Hanagan was truly incredible, She was fun, relaxed and got some epic shots. The amazingly colourful Flower crown and Bouquet was created by Most Curious Rose. The colours were so bold they worked beautifully with my dresses. (see credits below)
People’s reaction to your business…
People have made lovely comments about my designs and seem especially interested in having different coloured wedding dresses. The reaction to my business has been overwhelming over the past year. I have seen my little business grow and am so excited and proud that one of my designs will be in Vogue magazine in the Autumn.
Future plans…
Designing and adding more dresses to my collection. I aim to put on another fashion show soon, targeting non-traditional brides with my colourful designs.
I would one day like to include menswear but we will have to wait a few years for that.
